Chapter Fourteen – After the Spell

Jax looked across at Shannon.

"I'm sorry," he mouthed, with a weaker version of his old smile. Then he lifted his head and faced Marcus, determined that he would not give Marcus the satisfaction of seeing his fear.

"Stand aside," Marcus instructed Darius, and Darius slowly stepped away from Jax. Then Marcus raised both hands, and Shannon knew that it was now or never. She quickly escaped the Containment Spell inside her head.

Then just as Marcus began to project the glow of the Spell of Removal towards Jax, she said "Stop."

She spoke very softly, and half of the Council members did not hear her. But they certainly saw what happened next. Shannon used every single bit of magic she had inside her, to send the Spell of Immobility racing towards Marcus.

And it worked. The glow that had started to project from Marcus was totally frozen, hanging in the air as if it really had been turned to ice.

At first no-one knew what had happened. Marcus's expression was almost comical as he tried again to push his spell outwards. Jax looked at him for a moment, and then half-laughed in disbelief.

Turning to see who had cast the spell, he realised in amazement that it was Shannon. Shannon was starting to enjoy herself. She became aware that she didn't need to use all of her magic to hold the spell in place after all, so she toned it down a bit.

She grinned at Jax, and her usually solemn brown eyes were sparkling with glee. Jax was laughing properly by now, and the Council members had started to whisper to each other in consternation.

Revus was the first to get up out of his seat and cross the room to take a closer look, and he instantly understood that Marcus was being held by a very powerful Spell of Immobility.

What Revus couldn't quite believe was that the spell was coming from the Terran girl. And not only that, but she was showing no signs of struggling. She looked as if she could hold the spell all day.

"Marcus, old friend," began Revus, resting his hand on Marcus's shoulder. Marcus produced a sort of gurgling noise of frustrated rage deep in his throat, the only sound that he was able to make. Revus continued.

"It seems possible that the girl is somewhat more powerful than you thought."

Darius tried to smother his grin.

"The Council was clearly not in possession of all the facts when we made our vote on this punishment."

Turning to the other Council members, he said "I propose we postpone until we have had the chance to examine these new developments." Every single Council member agreed.

Revus lifted his hand from Marcus's shoulder and gave it a pat.

"I'll assume that you would be in agreement with us in light of this new information," he said kindly.

Then he walked across to Shannon and said to her "I think you can stop now, you've made your point." Leaning closer, so that only she could hear him, he breathed "Thank you.
